Being true to yourself
We often hear the term "authentic" as it relates to a desirable characteristic. Being authentic means being true to yourself no matter what the external circumstances. We each create a set of beliefs and values that direct us in our behaviors. They tend to be stable throughout our lives although they are subject to change based on new learning and experiences. Authenticity may be influenced by the epiphanies that occur as part of our life's journey. I can think of several that I have had that caused me to recalculate my beliefs and values. They are the ones I live by today. The challenge is in holding fast to them in times when they are called into practice. It sometimes feels easier to bend to the will and desires of others, but when we are authentic we maintain our bearings in spite of what may happen. We remember that we must look at ourselves in the mirror and be proud of who we see. That can be difficult when we are incongruent in our beliefs and actions. Know what you believe in and be willing to take that into the world on a daily basis. You have heard that referred to as the "courage of your convictions." You are free to change those convictions at any time to best reflect your true nature. How are you being true to yourself today?
