Fight, flight, or focus
I recently participated in a Zoom meeting on the topic of personality type and how each of the four types deals with stress. During a breakout session on how my type deals with the most extreme levels of stress, one of the participants brought up a situation which could be perceived as life threatening. I shared that I had actually faced such a situation. I found myself literally facing an armed gunman during a holdup. At that moment I chose to enter into a state of complete focus on what it would take to survive the encounter. Needless to say, the decision I made resulted in me being alive today to recount it. There may be times when the best way to address extreme stress is to face it with courage and be open to options. Fight or flight were among those options but not the ones I chose in that moment. When the time was right I chose my exit to a place of safety. We will be given what we need to take the right action and can have the peace of mind to do so.
