Resisting the truth
In working with clients it is not unusual to hear statements like, "I cannot ask for help" or "I am too old to be hired for that company." These are stories that clients make up for a variety of reasons. The stories may be a result of an early childhood experience. Perhaps an attempt to ask for help was met with, "Learn to do it yourself" or "I don't have time for you and your problems. I have enough of my own." Or the question of age may come from societal messages that only young people are hired for positions. It also makes being rejected for a position more palatable when it is more about age and less about skills. The truth is that we all need help in at least one point in our lives. No one can do everything at every moment. The truth is that we can learn throughout our lives until our brain no longer processes new information. When we resist the truth, we set up limiting beliefs that define how we live our lives. We create barriers to living the life we are here for. Embracing the truth allows us to see beyond our limiting stories and create ones that free us. What truths have you been resisting and what would your life be like if you let go of that resistance?
