Resolutions and intentions

Date:
January 1, 2015

During a recent visit to a friend's house, she asked me if I planned to make any New Year's resolutions. I told her I didn't make resolutions; I set intentions for the new year. She then wanted to know how these two were different. I explained that a resolution is a desire to make a positive change in one's behavior. It may typically be to lose 20 pounds, stop smoking, or exercise more. What it often lacks is a plan for achieving the desired effect. That is why almost 90% of resolutions made never come to fruition. An intention is a statement made related to what a person will have, do, or be. It may be directed towards traveling to a specific destination, moving into a new home, or dating the person who will eventually become your life partner. I keep focused on my intentions and review them on a regular basis. Some of them have already manifested while others are in the process of doing so. Since I never know exactly what will happen to bring them about, they have an element of excitement about them. I always remind myself that it is this or something better. What works better for you - resolutions or intentions - and which will you set today? Happy New Year!
