What's in a name?

Date:

Each of us has a name. It is how we identify ourselves. Some of us have names that are shared by many others while some of us have one of a kind names like me. We use our names in a variety of ways. We introduce ourselves to people we meet. We sign our names on documents. We wish each other well using our names on special occasions. I like to address people by their names. It adds something to our connection as human beings. I find it helpful to read a name badge in the grocery store, at the bank, or in a restaurant and use their name when we speak. It also helps to make eye contact and smile. At the end of our time together, I thank the person and wish them a good day. It's amazing how it makes my day and hopefully that of the other person. I also point out when they have provided excellent service again using their name. It is so easy to focus on the negatives when a little positive acknowledgment goes much further in solving a problem. What does it take to spend an minute or two engaging and listening to something of importance? Think of how you feel when someone uses your name. When was the last time you called someone by name and what did you take away from that experience?
