When we look at the events of our lives we may choose to categorize them under success and failure. We know when we succeed because we identify that with achieving our goal or intention. We apply for and are hired for a specific job. We study for and pass an exam. We save for and buy a car. In each case there was an effort made with a desirable outcome. What happens when we make the effort and the outcome is not so desirable? We make an investment and the company goes under. We study for an exam and still do not receive a passing grade. We interpret this as a failure. Another way to approach this result is to see it as a learning experience. What did I need to do to learn to reduce the likelihood of the perceived negative outcome? Or how can this event be seen as a positive? There are no failures, only experiences that add to the richness of being human. It is when we interpret our not achieving a goal as a measure of self-worth that we run into problems. What we do is not who we are. What would your life look like if you knew you couldn't fail?
