Accepting what I cannot change
There is a well-knownprayer that asks for the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Whenyou consider what those things are, there aren't as many changes to make as youwould like. We tend to focus on others changing as a means to feel better aboutourselves. "If he would stop treating me so badly, I could be so much moresuccessful in what I do." "If she would only keep her promises, Iwould be so much happier." In adopting this approach to life we place ourwell-being in the hands of others. We also avoid taking responsibility for ourown state in life. So many times people will attempt to exert control overothers to acquire what they want. Think how you feel when someone is trying tomanipulate you to get what they are seeking. If we are seeking serenity, thenit is time to face the fact that very few, if any, people will do what we wantto bring about a sense of self-satisfaction. It is time to go within andconsider what you can change. You have the power to change your own thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors to create a healthier sense of who you are. You takecontrol of your own life. What do you accept that you cannot change today?
