Up in the air

I recently flew from Manila to San Francisco on a 13-hour flight. During this time the flight conditions vacillated between perfectly smooth to strong turbulents. The passengers never knew when those conditions would change. The only warning of upcoming change was a flashing “Fasten Your Seat Belt” sign. When the sign was turned off, you knew that you were free to move about the cabin. Wouldn’t life be easier if the Universe flashed a “Fasten Your Seat Belt” anytime a significant change was about to occur in your life? But we rarely have that luxury. Instead we are required to face each change as it comes and do what we can until it passes. That change can last a matter of seconds or years. But the Universe will eventually turn the sign off even under the most drastic of circumstances. Then we can relax until the sign comes on again. Just like being a passenger on an airplane flight, we know that it will not always be smooth sailing. There will be some flights with minimal disturbances and others in which you wonder if you will survive. Those latter thoughts crossed my mind several times during my flight. Yet I arrived home unscathed trusting that the pilots knew how to keep us safe. The same can be said of the Universe. We simply need to trust that the outcome is what is meant to be. When was the last time you were alerted to “Fasten Your Seat Belt” and how did that turn out for you?
