Nostalgia
As we age, it isn’t unusual to look back upon our lives and reminisce over past events. They may include special times such as birthdays and holidays. There may be particular ones that stand out for you. The details may be so vivid that it feels like you are watching a movie in which you are a key player. You may ask yourself why you rarely feel such intense emotions at this point in your life. This is where nostalgia comes into play. It is like a powerful serum that boosts and enhances the experience. I can still recall one Christmas when I was about three years old. I was sitting in our living room with my parents and older brother mesmerized by the lights and the train circling around the base of the tree. It was a feeling I wanted to hold onto forever, pure magic. As I look back upon these moments, I realize that many of them centered around the age of three for me. That appeared to be a time for me when the world was perfect in my eyes. Eventually that world melted away to reveal a harsher reality. Nostalgia provides a sense of safety and comfort that we can return to anytime we wish. What memories evoke a sense of nostalgia for you?
