Practice.Practice.Practice
Think of a time when you were introduced to a new concept or behavior. You decided that it was something worth incorporating into your life. After one feeble attempt at the new task, you proclaimed to the world, "I tried that once and it didn't work." Most likely it didnt work because you didn't really give it much of a chance. Instead of trying a task once (unless it is detrimental to your well-being), commit to practicing it on a regular basis over the next 30 days. I am currently at the two-week mark for several new behaviors and they require conscious effort to implement. I have to write them into my schedule to make sure I act on them. Eventually they will become part of my regular routine and I will be better off on many levels in doing so. Much of the resistance to change comes from having to step outside of my comfort zone. For example, it is much easier to stay at home than to get dressed to go to exercise. I can think of a million reasons that I should just wait until tomorrow to exercise. Then I remind myself of the importance of adding this to my routine and off I go. Sometimes it is necessary to challenge what I am resisting and choose something different. After all, it IS a choice and I am free to change my mind down the road. Until then it is practice, practice, practice. What new behavior do you want to add to your life today and what are you willing to do to practice it?
