Practicing civility
When you look at the word "civilization," you see that the root of this word is "civil." When we think about being civil we think of acting in a manner that takes others into consideration. It is more than just being polite although that is an important aspect of civility. It is demonstrating respect for differences whether they be ideologies, backgrounds, or physical attributes. It is highly unlikely that any two people on our planet will experience the world in the same way based on these differences. That is the beauty of being human. How do I treat people as a way of acknowledging and accepting these differences? What does civility look like for me? Do I make judgments and attach labels that elevate or denigrate others? When we practice civility we stop and take the time to understand others and how they might see the world around them as it contributes to their behaviors. Remember that there is a difference between acceptance and approval. Practicing civility in today's world can be a challenge. What are you doing to exercise civility with those around you?
