Scents from the past

Date:
July 27, 2022

We often think about events from the past from a visual perspective. We visualize the event as if it was a motion picture having both sight and sound. But how often do we recall the past experiences from our olfactory or smelling sense? I can still smell the ocean the first time I visited Florida when I was about three years old. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before and it left an indelible impression on me. I have been to the ocean countless times since then, but the smell never comes near to that time in Florida. The same is true of the aroma of my grandmother's Christmas sugar cookies as she removed them from the oven. I can still smell the almond she used in it. What a gift it is to recall those scents and smells and immediately be transported back to happy childhood memories. Any time I am feeling down I can conjure up these smells and my mood seems to change accordingly. What are the scents that you recall from your past and what memories do you attach to them?
