The balance of freedom

It's not unusual to hear a child say, "I can't wait until I am a grown up. Then I can do anything I want." Whenever I would hear that my response would be, "Once you become a grown up, you will have even more rules to follow." Perhaps what the child is really saying is that there will be fewer people who are applying control to his or her life. We all desire the need to feel a sense of freedom and control of our lives. How do we maintain a balance between what is expected from us in the roles we play and our own level of freedom? It comes down to a question of our purpose in our actions. Are the choices we are making based on the need to contribute to the greater society in which we live? This could include paying taxes, voting, or following the rules of driving. It allows us to experience a sense of order and predictability which are important aspects of freedom. On a personal level we make choices that are meant to improve our sense of self worth and provide direction. This includes a decision to marry, pursue an education, or choose an occupation that best reflects our talents. Think of the many ways that you do express your freedom on a daily basis. What would be on your list today?
