Tomorrow is another day
In the movie, Gone with the Wind, Scarlett O’Hara approaches decision making by putting it off until tomorrow. We commonly refer to this as procrastination. It may reduce stress in the moment only to have it waiting for you the next day. Since our behavior is purposive, deciding to procrastinate may be based on not having the information needed to act on your choices. It may also be based on feeling overwhelmed by what is happening in your life today. It is just too much for you to handle. It may also be based on the fear of making a wrong choice. Of course that fear most likely will not disappear by putting your decision off for another day. What matters is how you deal with decisions when your tendency is to put them off until tomorrow. Lacking information requires that you stop and ask yourself what that is and what your plan for gathering it would be. If you are feeling overwhelmed, ask yourself what the smallest step would be in helping you move forward. If you fear making a wrong choice, it may be time to face that fear that keeps you stuck. Ask yourself, “What is the worst that could happen if I make this choice?” Then challenge its reality. If it is realistic, develop a plan to address it. All of these actions are self-empowering. Know that you can do this. What is happening in your life today that you are wanting to put off until tomorrow?
