What's your story?

The term, tabula rasa, translates as a “blank slate.” The term is used to describe the state in which we enter the world at birth. We have no life experience at that moment and the impressions that sweep over us begin to carve out our interpretation of what life holds for us. If we begin life feeling safe and protected, this will set the tone of what the future will be. If we begin life feeling abandoned and defensive, this can also affect our future. Of course at any given moment circumstances may change that can alter our story. A life that began as one in which the person felt safe and protected can do an about face if both parents die in an accident resulting in a placement in a less nurturing setting. Or a life that began in an abusive setting can be replaced with one filled with caring. There are countless stories of people who overcame the circumstances of their early upbringing to achieve great things. At one point they chose to change the narrative that accompanied their situation and rise above it. We define ourselves by the stories we create to explain our place in the world. The problem is that those stories are often interpreted in a faulty manner based on our view of the world. The good news is that you have the power to change the story to one that better serves you resulting in a rewiring of your neural pathways to reinforce your new beliefs. What are ways in which you would rewrite your story leading to a more positive outcome?
