Acts of kindness
As you were growing up, did you ever hear statements like “How could you be so stupid” or “No one wants you on their team?” If you did, how did you feel upon hearing them? Did they feel like you had just been stung or a deep feeling of hurt? They did little, if anything, to help build your self-esteem and self-worth. They generally originate from the other person’s own insecurities and fears hoping that their words will somehow have power over you. What if you heard statements like “Tell me what you are good at doing and show me how you do it” or “You seem to be struggling with pitching the ball. Would you be okay with me showing you how to do this?” These acts of kindness can do wonders in contributing to a positive self-image. It is so much easier to point out what is negative than encourage someone through constructive words. It takes some effort and practice to offer support, and it can be done if you see the value in it. The world would be a better place if we focused on acts of kindness. How are you practicing acts of kindness today?
