It seems like only yesterday
I recently reconnected with someone I sang with in the Stanford Symphonic Chorus. When we met again we tried to determine how long it had been since we had seen one another. It was longer than either of us thought. It had been fourteen years. Once we began to catch up on what had been happening in our lives, it felt like it had only been yesterday. Think about your own relationships that have gone through the same dynamics. You may not see one another for years and, when you do, it seems like no time has passed at all. What does that say about the nature of your relationship? After an evening of lively conversation over dinner, we resolved that we would not wait another fourteen years to see each other. That requires a conscious effort on our parts. Thinking back to other relationships I have had, they did not turn out quite the same. After one or two meetings, it did not appear that there was enough substance to continue to do so. It required an acceptance that not every relationship is meant to endure. There seems to be a natural flow to relationships destined to endure. Even when there are years that pass between the times you are together, the reconnection feels effortless as if that time was only yesterday. What relationships have you experienced that had endured the test of time and how has that been for you?
